CheckPoint Secure Client on Mac OS X 10.6.6 on a newer MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), (Early 2011) fails – solved

Posted on 18 March 2011

As stated on Apple’s Support page in this Article newer Mac’s boot up in 64-bit kernel by default. If Checkpoint Secure Client is needed to be used, this will not work together. This is due to the fact that Checkpoints VPN Client is only 32-bit.
So in order to get it working, the Mac OS needs to run with 32-bit kernel as it did on the Macs earlier by default.

Please follow this article on Apple’s support page to switch back to 32-bit kernel and you will get Checkpoint’s VPN Client running.

Note, this fix doesn’t seem to work on OS X 10.6.7 as I have followed the above ensured, ensured I’m in 32 bit using “uname -a” and still getting the same “Service not started, please reboot” issue.

Note, I do still have the “modified” version of SecureClient to work on SnowLeopard and not the official Snow Leopard version.

It works on 10.6.7. Checkpoints official version for SL will work on any 10.6, all it needs is 32 bit mode and the mdnsResponder files as described in my other article.

In such way we using about 9 VPN clients.

    Hi there,

I am probably missing something here; I’ve just bought a new iMac running 10.6.6 – one of the new sandybridge ones. Managed to download “SecureClient NG-AI R56 HFA 2 for Mac OSX Snow Leopard (10.6)” and install it OK. When I first tried to run it I got the message that the service wasn’t started and to reboot – about 2 mins after startup.

Changed into 32 bit mode and confirmed it is running this way – says i386 not 64 in terminal. Now doesn’t come up with error message but nothing happens when I try to start Secureclient… Have tried looking in the directory and manually running a couple of files – e.g. ‘SR_Service’ but it just opens a terminal window and says:

[Tick 379527569] VPN-1 SecureClient/Securemote – Starting SR_Service but then never completes, just sits there and does nothing…

Any help gratefully received as if I can’t VPN into work I might as well take it back to the shop!

    Thanks in advance

Did you try reinstalling the CPs VPN client. Definitely be on 32 bit mode. Also make usre yu are using the mdnsResponder files from 10.6.4.

If thats not the case, let me know wta console logs shows.

Thanks a million! Spent the whole day trying to figure this out and it turns out the kernel had to be switched to 32bit.. I hope CheckPoint catches up with the Macs, they are always behind several months…
